Tips for Preparing Your Home for Severe Weather in Kansas City

April 18, 2022

In the Midwest, we’re no strangers to severe weather, but sometimes, the change in the air can come on a little too suddenly—so it’s important to always have a plan in place in order to be ready for whatever may happen in your area. As a builder in the Greater Kansas City area, our team at Inspired Homes takes great care to ensure that our homes are built with the highest quality of materials to keep our homeowners safe—but we also want to share a few tips to keep in mind so your home and your loved ones stay safe, no matter what.

Preventative steps you can take at home

There’s truly no telling what type of weather could pass through the Greater Kansas City area at any given time, so it’s best to keep up with a few easy tips to ensure that no further damage will befall your house—especially while you’re at home.

First, the best thing to do is to walk around your yard and see what sort of condition your trees are in. Look at the bark, trunk, roots and branches, and make sure that there isn’t any obvious damage that you can see such as root rot, leaning trees or dead branches. As soon as summer starts back up, it can sometimes be easier for you to spot dead tree branches since it is typical for them to lose their leaves or bark. If you see anything that looks questionable, there’s never any harm in calling up a professional to come and take a look in order to see if anything needs to be done to ensure that your home always stays safe.

If you know that you can expect severe weather on a certain day, make sure to double check that all of your windows and doors are closed and that any loose or valuable objects you may own are in a secure location.

Sign up for local alerts

It can sometimes be difficult to know when severe weather is going to hit, but there are a variety of ways that you can stay in-the-know in your home location. You won’t always be able to tune in to the local weather channel, but the KMBC News site allows you to sign up to receive severe weather alerts on your phone or email, so you will always know what to expect.

Severe weather can also roll in late at night when you’re already in bed, so try to make a habit of turning your severe weather alert notifications on and making sure that your volume on your phone is up before you go to sleep.
