Do What Deon Does | Garbage Disposals

January 27, 2023

Deon Cross recently retired as our VP of Construction from Inspired Homes, but didn't go far. Deon has spent his entire life in the homebuilding industry and has more knowledge that he knows what to do with. We asked him to share his "what not to do", "expert opinions", "best tips and tricks", and yes, even jokes.

Garbage Disposal - Not Every Belongs Down There

Many people know some of the items to avoid putting down the garbage disposal but there are more that most of us simply don't know of or think about.

Common items to avoid:

  • Grease
  • Egg shells
  • Dry pasta or rice since it expands when wet and becomes sticky
  • Coffee grounds
  • Onion skins, potato skins, or anything similar that can stick or wedge to the side of the unit
  • Fibrous foods such as celery, corn husks, artichoke, etc.

A common error is running the disposal a very short time with very little water.  It is recommended to let the disposal run long enough to completely grind up food particles and then flush with large amounts of water to move it well into the drain line system.

From start to finish we are very satisfied and happy with this new home in Lenexa. All the Inspired Home participants did an excellent job guiding and helping us move. Thank you all for a job well done. You have made a difficult decision easily accomplished.
